Fellowships and Grants

Gluck Fellowships

The Theater Department solicits majors and minors who are interested in receiving Gluck Fellowships (undergraduate students receive a $1,000 fellowship and graduate students receive a $5,000 fellowship) for leading workshops in acting, directing, playwriting and/or design at local elementary, middle and high schools. Students must have successfully completed classes in the areas they are interested in teaching. Gluck Fellows work with designated faculty in preparing the hour-long classes. Fellows work in teams of two, and workshops are scheduled throughout the school year.

Fellowships are awarded on a yearly basis during the summer quarter. Interested students must submit an application to the Gluck Office no later than June 15 to be considered for the following year.

For more information please call the Gluck Office at 951-827-3518 or 951-827-5739.

The Richard Risso Endowed Award in Theatre

Each year, the Theatre faculty presents the Richard Risso award to one or two students in the Department who show outstanding ability in acting and/or directing. The award is presented in January of each year with nominations and selections made by the faculty.

This award, which was created by two UCR alumni, is named for Richard Risso, a UCR Professor Emeritus and one of the leading classical stage directors and actors in the United States. Professor Risso received his B.A., from San Jose State, his M.F.A. from Carnegie Tech, and his Ph.D. from Stanford. He directed extensively at UCR and at such outstanding regional theatre companies as the Oregon and Utah Shakespeare Festivals, the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, and the Milwaukee Repertory Company.

Currently, Professor Risso can often be seen performing at the Denver Theatre Center in Colorado.
